Following the Compromise of 1877, many supporters of black rights, such as freed slaves or radical Republicans, believed that conditions for freed blacks were worse than they had been when they were enslaved. Though there were definitely upsides to freedom from slavery, many conditions blacks lived under either didn t change or got worse after the Compromise. For example, the removal of the military from the South allowed the southern government to pass laws limiting blacks rights, meaning the social, political and economic conditions after the compromise were similar to the ones they had lived with under slavery; the legalization of segregation made it more difficult for blacks to influence white perception of their race; and violence against blacks increased, and white protection of them decreased, as many saw them as less valuable once they had been released from slavery. He will be overseeing the privatization of Queensland Railway and will be managing the people during this process. This essay provides the reader with an insight o f the current work environment of Queensland Railway and will try to paint a picture of the entire privatization process as it is expected to go about (Commonwealth of Australia, 2016). This essay also covers the possible outcomes and impact that privatization is going to have on the workforce and the work culture. There are a number of human resource management issues and the issues related to employee relations that are going to impact the work of the new manager taking charge of the Human Resource Management (Strachan, 2017). He will have to take care of all these issues and handle them by being the representative and the face of the employees of Queensland Railway. All these issues that are going to come up during and due to the privatization of Queensland Railway are covered in this report to help the new HR manager with the management of the workforce in the new location (RTBU Queensland Branch, 2008). Queensland Railway The rail transport and its responsibilities were initially with the states as they managed their respective railway lines. Each of the Australian states managed and developed their rail network independently from the rest of the stated and without any interruption from the central government. With the onset of liberalization of the rail transport industry began the privatization of the railways (Vowles, 2010). The first railways to get privatized was the line in New Zealand in the year 1993. Which was followed by all the Australian states and by the year 2002, all the state owned railway network were privatized except for the Queensland Railway which still continues to be a state owned entity. The privatization of these networks has had both positive and negative effects on the railways. The privately owned railways are able to provide better service to the people, specifically when travelling across state borders by having a more consolidated working. The railway transportation indu stry in Australia has been transformed with the privatization and due to this pressure has been mounting on the Queensland State Government and the Queensland Railway to opt for privatization just like the rest of the rail networks (Wiltshire, 2010). The Queensland Railway has battled with the idea of privatization for about 25 years now. They have fought against the pressure from the Federal Government and continues to remain a wholly state government owned railway line. However, due to the increase in pressure from the competitors in the form of the privately held railway lines from the rest of the states and reducing profit margins, the business has been depressed for Queensland Railway (QR National Limited, 2016). The Queensland Government has decided to privatize Queensland Railway in its current position as a vertically integrated business with the trains and the tracks complete to Aurizon. Impact of privatization A state owned enterprise is the strongest image of the society and the privatization of a state owned entity can have a profound effect on the human resource of the organization. There is no database of comprehensive listing of these impacts, but a number of studies have proven that privatization changes the work environment of the organization completely and there are a number of changes regarding the employment patterns of the workforce that get affected due to it. The privatization elements shape the strategies of growth of the business and the methods that the investors use to make profits from the operations of the organization. All these factors play a role in the Human Resource Planning for the organization and determine the course of Human Resource management (Quiggin, 2010). This report primarily focuses on the impact of privatization on the Human Resource Performances and Planning for Queensland Railway as it proceeds with its privatization. Some of the major issues that the employees of Queensland Rail are going to face with the decision of privatization are the changes in job roles, the autonomy of the organization, changes in the skill requirements due to differences in the work process and the employment generation pattern for the organization. Privatization of operations reduces the autonomy of planning and performing the assigned roles and responsibilities. The employees under the new work environment will experience less freedom and will be micromanaged towards the completion of their assigned duties. There will be more challenges in the roles assigned as the work environment of a public sector is very different from that of the private sector. The employees may see more challenges coming their way and their jobs may become tougher (Ludlow, 2016). The privatization to Aurizon will also increase the job insecurity among the employees dramatically. There are already high chances of loss of jobs as Aurizon has announced a number of changes in the processes and the functioning of the rail freight once it acquires it. The private entities also tend to make a shift to contract labor to reduce the accounta bility and labor costs. This will result in requirement of more diverse skills in addition to the ones possessed by the employees currently and job losses for the current employees. The requirement of advanced skills might also result in the generation of employment, however the organization will most likely shuffle the existing workforce in the organization keeping in mind the pre-privatization employment contract (Carey, 2017). There is going to be no major impact on the remuneration and compensation of the existing employees as they are going to continue with the similar job only under the name of a different organization now. Privatization influences the relations that the organization has with the other organizations in the industry. This section is going to explain ways these impacts can be cushioned and how the manager can handle these in an effective and efficient manner without causing an organization wide chaos. When privatization becomes a requirement for the development of the organization, the industry and the country, the decision is based on the assumption that the state owned organizations are not that efficient or profitabl e. Although there exists no empirical evidence to prove it, this has been going on for decades now and privatization has been embraced by countries all over the world. When privatization of the firms happens, there comes a huge difference in the way the organizations had been operating earlier and how they operate once a private entity decides to run it (Clara, 2010). The difference is not just in the organizational operations, but also the employee management and human resource management practices. The discussion and decision making during privatization is mostly centered towards the macroeconomic functions and efficiency of the organization. The human resource of the organization and their management is the topic which is generally overlooked during the privatization process (Missouri, 2014). It is important to note here that the efficiency of any organization depends on the production of goods and services by the firm. For this, the technical, commercial, financial and human res ources must work in a synchronized manner. For Queensland Rail, the organization and the decision makers at this time must study and try to manage the expectations, perceptions, work behavior and performance of the employees to keep the transition process smooth. The managers must take care of the Human Resources in order to achieve their strategic objectives. The objective that the organization aims to achieve through privatization is the allocation and technical efficiency which will ultimately lead to improved performance (MIT, 2012). The organization Aurizon needs a workforce that is committed, concerned and competent. Therefore, the capacity and willingness of the employees of Queensland Rail play a very important role in the privatization and the post privatization performance of Aurizon. At the same time Aurizon also needs Human Resource Management policies that help in the effective and productive use of their employees. The first step that the HR manager needs to take for t his is elevating the personnel concerns and concerns of the human resource of the organization to a strategic level and recognize how important the employees are in the attainment of the organizational goals. They also need to design the strategy to manage the employees and improve their capacity to perform by motivating them and making them willing to perform with the changed strategic vision. Layoffs are sensitive tasks to deal with. The manager must be aware and prepared with the legal formalities when laying off employees. Good records of these legal proceedings and the conversations during this process must be kept and maintained for future reference. The manager must ensure that the scheduled layoffs during the privatization process are carried out by having appropriate and timely communication of the process in place. The department of Human Resource Management and the immediate managers of the employees being laid off must be notified of the decision and they must administer the process carefully and diligently. The organization can also train the employees for the skills required for carrying out the changed system and processes. The organization must first collect all the required in formation and design an effective plan for staff reduction. The seniority and job skills must be studied and assessed to ensure that the positions for which the layoffs are to be conducted are identified correctly. The impact of the layoffs on the organizational work and performance and on the morale of the employees who continue to work with the organization should also be understood. Any possible obstacles to the process must be identified and planned for in advance. The employees must be informed about the availability of information, guidance and resources that they can make a use of. Eric is a young man who likes getting his own way and being the centre of attention. At beginning of act one, all the characters are quite enjoying Sheila engagement with Gerald. In this act Eric begins to laugh uncontrollably and rises from his chair (Suddenly guffaws), Sheila question what he is laughing about he replies that he just felt the need to laugh, Sheila calls him squiffy. Erick provokes her sister and she calls him an ass , at which point Mrs. Birling tells the two of them to stop it. From the previous researches chest pain was observed to be one common complaints in children and previous findings reported it to be more prominent in old ages with mean age of 13 and cardiac causes was responsible for less than 20% of chest pain complaints in younger children and in community which was supposed to exist because of ischemic vertical dysfunction, myocardial and pericardial inflammatory process or arrhythmia but exact cause for cardiac chest pain was still in dark. Specialised methods like echocardiography, Holter monitoring, excercise stress test, electrophysiological studies were reported to be required to assess cardiac diseases in children responsible for chest pain but still it may not be able to give exact causes of chest pain. The purpose for this study was to identify cardiac diseases and to explore cardiac causes which were directly associated with chest pain in children.(Cagdas and Pac, 2009) Methods: In this study 120 children with ages in between 5-16 years who were frequently reported to pediatric cardiology clinic regarding chest pain were analysed in a tertiary subspecialty clinic from March 2005 to May 2006. The reason for selecting children with ages 5-16 years having chest pain complains was based on previous findings of studies and was good choice of selection for assessment of cardiac diseases related to chest pain as it was targeted group for chest pain and further in this study it was divided in two age groups that was 5-12 years age group and 13-16 years age group because of psychogenic pain consideration in children older than 12 years age which was good reasoning for dividing groups. Thus it was cross-sectional and a retrospective assessment but as it relies on previous findings and data from other clinics it might have limitations in selection and number selected that was 120 subjects seems to be very less for this type of assessment thus it might lead in error.(Ca gdas and Pac, 2009) The strength of this study was dependent on the outcomes of methods used for analysis of cardiac diseases associated with chest pain. All selected patients were subjected to Echocardiography, Electrocardiography(ECG) and Chest X-Ray and analysis of Hemogram, serum glucose and electrolytes was done. In Chest X-Ray all necessary images to diagnose heart, lung, chest wall and big vessels are generated by ionising radiation in X-ray form (P.A.Mahesh, 2006). In Electrocardiography functioning of different parts of heart muscles are measured by recording in skin electrodes placed on different positions of heart and it displays in ECG as electrical signal. The display of ECG shows rhythm of heart and damage of any heart muscles can be concluded(Meek and Morris, 2002). Echocardiogram generates two-dimensional pictures using ultrasound techniques for cardiovascular systems. In Echocardiography echoes of sound waves are picked by transducer and are transmitted as electrical impulses which are then converted to motion pictures of heart by Echocardiography machine and also movement of blood via heart is recorded by Doppler probe. Different types of cardiac diseases can be identified by this methods.(Quinones et al., 2003) Also excercise and tilt table test and twenty four hour Holter monitoring was carried out in some required cases which also gave detail regarding cardiac diseases. In 24 hour Holter monitoring test for 24 hour an electrodes are attached on chest of the subject to be monitored by which electrical activity of heart is recorded to an attached small battery operated monitor. Note of all activities carried out by patient during 24 hours is required and results after 24 hour of test are analysed to see any irregular changes in rhythm of heart and for further analyses of cardiac disease (Hilbel et al., 2008). Different ways are developed to perform tilt table depending on individual patient generally patient is obstructed to any physical movement of body and kept flat on tilt table and it is then suspended or tilted at different angles. Actually this study was designed and conducted on algorithm setup in which depending on types of symptoms observed from physical examination and history of patients it was further evaluated using different methods to identify cardiac causes.(Cagdas and Pac, 2009) SPSS 11.0(SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) software was use to carry out statistical assessment in which Chi-square test was selected for analyses of difference in variables of groups in which significant level p value was kept less than 0.05 and risk between groups was compared by odds ratio value(95% Confidence Interval). Here the total number of patients was 120 which is quite large thus selection of Chi-square test to analyse difference in variables of two groups was perfect.(Cagdas and Pac, 2009) Results: In this study out of 120 patients depending on history and physical examination evaluation of further detail assessment by performing stated techniques as required 52(42.5%) patients were found to have cardiac diseases out of which 11(9.2%) patients on admission were found to have history of cardiac disease and in 28(23.3%) patients chest pain was supposed to be directly associated with cardiac disease and out of 28 patients 14(11.6%) were reported with different types of arrhythmias as shown in table 2.(Cagdas and Pac, 2009) On complete assessment of all patients for cardiac disease according to the age group that is 5-12 years of age and 12-16 years of age the children were analysed with structural Cardiac Disease and types of arrhythmia as shown in table 1 and 2.(Cagdas and Pac, 2009) Different types of Cardiac diseases found to be associated with chest pain is also listed in table 1 and 2. In previous findings majority of patients were assessed by only echocardiography without performing 24 hour holter monitor test to any patients while in this study echocardiography was performed to all children and holter monitoring was done for 38(31.6%) patients out of 120 as required and also frequencies of arrhythmias was found to be 11.6% and same ratio for structural cardiac disease which as compared to other studies was high. Thus use of various methods for assessing cardiac diseases associated with chest pain was good effort made in this study.(Cagdas and Pac, 2009) One finding of this study was that chest pain complains was more in the elder children which was supported by previous epidemiological studies for the chest pain complaints. Cardiorespiratory problems in young children and psychogenic pain in children older than 12 years of age was reported from previous studies while from this study 4.12 times more risk to cardiac disease was found in elder age group on analysing all cardiac diseases and was explained because of aging related risk of arrhythmias or increase in structural cardiac diseases symptoms or increase in level of consciousness with increasing age regarding cardiac chest pain symptoms which was satisfactory reasoning given in this study. From the SPSS results it concluded that older children were at high risk to structural cardiac disease (p=0.011) and 3.53 times more frequent to arrhythmias. Thus use of SPSS results in analyses of cardiac disease was one very important part of this study as it explored some critical and diffe rent results compared to other studies.(Cagdas and Pac, 2009) In 28(23.3%) patients chest pain was supposed to be directly caused by cardiac diseases and which was assumed because of high frequency of some cardiac diseases in patients selected but clear reasons for chest pain was still not proved. From previous studies majority of non-cardiac chest pain was reported because of gastro-esophageal reflux diseases and in this study total 40 patients were suffering chest pain because of similar reasons like abdominal pain, epigastric tenderness etc which highlighted one important conclusion that their may exist more than one cause for chest pain not necessary that its always related to cardiac disease. This study also gave example of important application of echocardiography in diagnosis of rheumatic valvular heart disease as it was detected in 17 children as compared to analyses done by clinical examination for existence of rheumatic valvular heart disease.(Cagdas and Pac, 2009) In this study following the particular algorithm the study groups were analysed from which many results reported was different from that concluded by physical examination like in 16 patients physical examination showed it to be innocent murmur but was found to have structural cardiac disease on further analyses. Thus though this type of algorithm requires some extra excercise but it made analyses to identify cardiac disease more clear.(Cagdas and Pac, 2009) Overall this study concluded that risk of cardiac disease was increased with age and it also gave percentage of cardiac disease that was 42.5% which was high as compared to other studies. The study also highlighted importance and use of different methods that can be used for detail analyses of cardiac disease that was not covered in previously performed studies but this type of evaluation was to be carried out with larger number of patients to get more clear with results and draw important conclusion because by analysing only 120 children with chest pain one common conclusion can not be given. Selection of proper SPSS tests was done which gave important results for this study. This study attempted very well to identify cardiac diseases causing chest pain with all good planning and reasoning behind all steps and methods used but still research in area of cardiac diseases will not be clear unless any sure and specific result for particular cardiac disease can be taken as reference to i dentify and to draw conclusion.

(pg. 404). He constantly struggled with the "henpecking" of his wife. Van Winkle found refuge and comfort going squirrel shooting with his dog. "Rip Van Winkle" depicts a story of a man longing to be free, and of the transformation that occurs to him and the town. Van Winkle "would have whistled life away" (pg. 404) had it not been for his wife . This served as a foreshadow for what was to come. Van Winkle wanted peace and to be left alone. He was like a kid; he often "made their playthings, taught them to fly kites and shoot marbles..." (pg. 403). He always did what could "be got with least thought or trouble," (pg.404) just as a child often does. He just "shrugged his shoulders...but said nothing," (pg. 404) to Dame Van Winkle's lectures. He was tired of hearing her, yet did nothing to change his behaviors or at least to try to please her. Van Winkle did "dream" his life away. He was gone for twenty years and returns to find his town and life different from how he had left it. I believe he just left one day and before he knew it, twenty years had past. Dame Van Winkle represented the Revolutionary War. "The changes of states and empires made but little impression on him," (pg. 412) but he did displease the "petticoat government." He describes the government as if it were a woman. "Petticoat" is a representation of Dame Van Winkle. Van Winkle pays no attention to his wife nor does he fight back, just as he did not fight in the war. Or, was this his war he was battling? When Van Winkle reflects on top of the mountain, "he heaved a heavy sigh when he thought of encountering the terrors of Dame Van Winkle." (pg. 406) "Terrors" come to mind when one thinks of war. Van Winkle doesn't regard Dame as his wife, rather he thinks of her as "Dame Van Winkle," with no affection.

Business marketing - Essay Example Research is an activity that is intended to arrive at a solution for a question or set of questions. (Ghauri & Gronhaug, 2005). Therefore, research needs to be executed in a systematic way with proper planning. Saunders et al. (2007) perceive research as an onion with different layers (figure 3.1). Figure 3.1: The Research ‘Onion’ Source: Saunders et al., (2007) As per the research onion, the five layers of research are Research philosophy, research approach, research strategy, time horizon and data collection (Saunders et al., 2007). 3.2 RESEARCH PHILOSOPHY Research philosophy refers to the methodology and strategies used by the researcher based on the researcher’s individual assumptions. Saunders et al. (2007) states that a research philosophy is related to the nature and development of the knowledge. Thus, a research philosophy is mostly based on the researcher’s perception about knowledge and its development. A research process is influenced by three ma jor thinking’s of research philosophy which are axiology, ontology and epistemology. Axiology is the frame reference for scientific ethics (Edwards, 1995). As mentioned, axiology forms the study of the ethical part, that is, value and principles by using mathematical proof. Ontology is about the behaviour of social entities. Ontology is regarded with the nature of social entities, where it possesses the question whether social entities can and should be considered as objective entities that have a reality external to the social actors, or whether they can and should be considered social constructions build up from the perceptions and actions of social actors (Bryman & Bell, 2007). The two main theories of ontology are objectivism and contructionism. The third thinking Epistemology explains about knowledge. It raises the question as to what should be considered as the perfect knowledge in a discipline. (Bryman & Bell, 2007). Epistemology ensures whether an area of study is wor th the research. (Gill & Johnson, 2010). The three research divisions of Epistemology are positivism, realism and interpretivism. 3.2.1 Positivism Positivism could be considered as an epistemological position that supports the application of the methods to learning of a social reality and beyond (Bryman & Bell, 2007). Checkland (1999) explains that positivism is a method for procuring knowledge which can be tested publicly with a rational thinking supported by observation and experimentation tools. In a research with positivism, the researcher will adopt a philosophical approach for arriving at a solution. Saunders et al. (2007) Therefore, a rational and thoughtful experimentation is the primary focus of positivism. As per Kolb (1984), a researcher is an accommodator. This is based on the concept of ‘Learning Style Assessment.’ Such researcher falls under the category of positivists. (Figure 3.2). This shows the attitude and interests of the researchers in trying solvin g problems. Positivism stresses on data and observations that are quantifiable and that can be statistically analysed. (Remenyi et al., 1998). Through tools such as questionnaires, data will be collected and statistical tools will be used to analyse the same. Analysis will also be based on the situations. Early childhood education Essay Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel (1782-1852) was a German educator born in Oberweisbach. He is known as the founder of â€Å"Kindergarten† and was one of the most influential educational reformers of the 19th century. Froebel had a difficult childhood. His mother died when he was still young, and his father, a pastor, and stepmother neglected to care for him. Finally, an uncle took over his care and ensured that he receive a high school education. It was there that young Froebel grew up with a love for nature and strong Christian faith, which led him to seek happiness and unity in all things. Froebel’s faith also led him to think as an educationalist. Froebel studied at the University of Jena for a short time. In 1805, while studying architecture in Frankfurt, he was persuaded to become a teacher by the model school at Frankfurt. He then studied with Pestalozzi at Yverdon, before returning to the University of Gottigen and Berlin in Germany. Froebel believed that there was something missing in Pestalozzi’s theory- the ‘spiritual mechanism’. According to Froebel, this was the basis of early childhood education. â€Å"Pestalozzi takes man existing only in appearance on earth,† he said, â€Å"but I take man in his eternal being, in his eternal existence. † (Shapiro, 1983, p. 20. ) Froebel took a break from studying to join the army for a year from 1813-1814. Afterwards, he received a position at the mineralogical museum in the University of Berlin. Two years later, he founded a school at Greisheim (which later mover to Keilau) which he called the Universal German Educational Institute. It was there that he taught his methods to other teachers. Froebel opened the first Kindergarten in the year of 1837 in Bad Blankenburg. Later, he also founded a Kindergarten training school at Liebenstein. Froebel felt that children, like plants in a garden, need to be cared for and shielded from outside influences. Froeble believed that children need to imitate a teacher’s values and morals. Therefore, teachers need to be respected, receptive, and easily approachable. Among Froebel’s subordinates, however, there were constant disputes, which he was unable to control. He encountered more problems when the Prussian government did not approve of his ideas. In 1851, an edict was issued, which forbade the establishment of Kindergartens. This decree was repealed almost 10 years later- in 1860. Froebel was not alive at that time and had no idea of the impact he left on the school system worldwide, and especially in the United States. The philosophers of his times, Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814) and Friedrich Wilhelm Schelling (1775-1854), also influenced Froebel’s educational ideas. He placed an emphasis on self-activity, physical training, and pleasant surroundings in the development of children.
